The NMHDU (National Mental Health Development Unit – www.nmhdu.org.uk ) is part of the Department of Health, working to convert national policy in mental health and social care into active use. They develop methods, practices and resources that help improve health and social care services.

Stamp out stigma is a campaign that aims to educate the public about the realities of mental health problems and learning disabilities and to ask them to make a pledge not to use words that can hurt, offend and stigmatise people suffering from these complex and often distressing conditions.

Attitudes to mental illness 2010 research report

The latest national statistics on Attitudes to Mental Illness produced by the Department of Health were released on 30 March 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Since March 1994, the Department of Health has placed a set of questions on TNS’s Face-to-Face Consumer Omnibus about public attitudes towards mental illness. From 1994 to 1997 the questions were asked on an annual basis and then every third year up until 2003.

Airbrush warnings could help fight anorexia

A leading mental health body has called for warning symbols to accompany airbrushed pictures of models and celebrities to help combat eating disorders.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists said a kite mark on digitally enhanced photographs would raise awareness of how often such manipulation takes place and help stop people trying to achieve "unattainable physical perfection".

Depression in Pregnancy May Lead to Antisocial Teens

Teens whose mothers were depressed during pregnancy are at increased risk for antisocial behavior, including violence, a new study suggests.

The British researchers also found that women prone to aggressive and disruptive behaviour in their teen years are more likely to become depressed during pregnancy, which shows that a mother's history predicts her children's antisocial behaviour.

The government is preparing to announce a major shift in mental health policy in England with a new emphasis on tackling and preventing depression.

The 10-year strategy is expected to call for better identification of those most at risk and wider access to psychological therapies for patients.

Depression or anxiety affect one in six people at some point in their lives, yet only one in four is in treatment.
