July's Top Tip for a Flourishing 2008!

July’s Top Tip: Tell friends you value them

The Health Improvement Team in St Helens is offering a 'top tip' every month in 2008 to enhance your mental health and to help you to make this year a happy and healthy one.

July's top tip is: ‘Tell friends you value them'.

Valuing yourself and others is good for your mental health.

It helps to build your own and other people’s self esteem, which is important because it increases confidence levels and protects us from mental distress.

Research shows that valuing yourself and others can improve your mental health.

Here are some ways of valuing yourself and others:

· Say nice things to yourself – positive affirmations are a good way of putting a positive spin on a difficult situation.
· List all the things you like about yourself and all the things you have achieved.
· Say hello to your neighbourhoods
· Tell your friends and family how much you care about them
· Remember to visit friends who may be frail and unable to get out and about.

Positive affirmations

Today will be full of exciting opportunities

I invite peace and harmony into my life

I am strong, capable and confident

I have the right not to seek the approval of others

I alone create joy and happiness in my life

In setbacks I think of positives first

I have the right not to take others problems on or make them mine

I have the right to say no without feeling guilty

I am a nice person. I love and approve of myself

No person, place, or thing has any power over me. I am free
