Last year in July, 10 Helena housing sheltered housing schemes in St Helens took part in an event called "Grey Matters". The theme behind the day was to raise awareness of keeping a healthy mind as we get older, the event ran in conjunction with Erosh the Sheltered housing website.
Although the message is a serious one, the days events were centred on keeping a healthy mind in a fun and sociable way. The activities co-ordinator who organised the events worked with Helena staff and residents to make the day a success.
The mayor of St Helen's attended the event at Rainford Road in Billinge and was so impressed with the days events, that she invited the residents to the Mayors office for tea.
The events that took place included, reminisence sessions with local historian's, craft activities, an inter-scheme quiz, refreshments, Tai Chi, relaxation sessions.
Due to the success of last years event, and the feedback from the residents it was decided to run the event again this year in an even bigger and better way. The St Helen's Healthy Living Team have part funded the event with Helena housing. This year the residents will be more empowered to make decisions and organise their events with the support of Helena staff. This year the residents will be working to a budget, the layout of rooms, deciding on the order of events, who to invite, taking responsibility for refreshments, working with local schools to produce banners to advertise the events. One scheme will be filming the event and others will be taking photos so that they can reflect on the happy events that have taken place.
This year we will be having the inter-scheme quiz and also a poetry and art competition, along with arts and craft sessions, Tai Chi, chair based exercise, reminiscence, belly dancing demo's, tea dances, health and well being DVD, cheese and wine tasting and refreshments.
Over 50's from the wider community are more than welcome to attend and if you are a service provider or external agency and you would like to get involved please contact the activities co-ordinator at Helena Housing on 01744 675766.
