1st March 2008 is Self-injury Awareness Day (SIAD).
Research from the Office of National Statistics ("Non-fatal suicidal behaviour among adults aged 16-74 in Great Britain") found that 2% of respondants had deliberately injured themselves without suicidal intent.
There are approximately 60,776,238 people (July 2007 est.) in Great Britain. If 2% of the population have deliberately injured themselves at some point, this equates to 1,215,525 people. These figures only include those between the ages of 16-74, which means the number will be higher.
Other research done around self-injury has found that only 13% of people who have deliberately self-injured presented to hospital. Again, this shows that the number of people who have/do deliberately injure themselves would most likely be a lot higher than people think.
One of the main reasons for people keeping their behaviour "Secret" is because there is a lot of stigma attached to self-injury. Many jump to the conclusion that those who do harm themselves are "attention-seekers".
Self-injury awareness day is all about educating people about the issue. Helping them to understand that this is a big problem throughout the world, and most importantly working to tackle the stigma and myths around self-injury.
On Saturday 1st March 2008, No Secrets Self-injury support groups (St Helens), along with The Wellbeing Project CIC and St Helens Rangers' service, have organised a short 3 mile walk to help raise awareness of the subject.
The walk will start at 1pm from Sankey Valley Country Park Visitor Centre, and will end at Bankes Park (Billinge) where there will be a minibus to take anyone back to the starting point. This walk is suitable for people of all ages (including children, from 5 years +).
We are encouraging people from all walks of life to come along and join us on this gentle walk. Come and show your support, as well as meeting new people and seeing a different side to St Helens.
